1984, a novel written by George Orwell in 1949, is a thought-provoking critique on totalitarianism, censorship, government surveillance programs, and the acceptance of contradictory ideas. The book follows a man’s journey through realizing that the government has been manipulating and lying to him and the rest of his country for as far back as anyone can remember, as well as his eventual rebellion against the government in small ways, and his falling under the government’s control again in the end. This book is incredibly well written and anyone looking for a book meant to make you think about life and the consequences of government overreach would find this an incredibly interesting and insightful read.
