Women’s History Month (2021)

Women’s History Month starts on March 1st, ending the last day of the month, the 31st. This month-long recognition was created to remember the achievements of past American women throughout history and to encourage young girls to make a difference like those of their predecessors. The entire nation takes this time to reflect on women’s contributions to culture, society, and the history of the United States. Each year there is a theme selected for the month. This year, 2021, the theme was “Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced”, which recognizes those who fought for women’s suffrage.

Women’s History Month was originally Women’s History Week when it began in 1981. For the next five years, things continued similarly: Congress would pass resolutions for the president to declare a week of March as Women’s History Week. In 1987,  the National Women’s History Project petitioned for Women’s History Week to become Women’s History Month, which it is known as today. Some of the extraordinary women celebrated during this time are Abigail Adams, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks, and many, many others
